Things to do near Sevenoaks with kids

Knole is free and enormous. Most people don't know it exists. Sevenoaks has a secret it doesn't bother advertising: Knole Park — one of the largest medieval deer parks in England — is free, open year-round and about five minutes from the high street. A thousand acres of parkland with actual fallow deer wandering through it. Children who announce they don't like walking tend to revise that position fairly quickly once they've seen a deer at close range. It costs nothing. It takes as long as you want it to. Hever Castle is twenty minutes south and a completely different kind of day — paid, busy in summer, absolutely worth it at least once. The water maze is the headline act: you will get wet, your children will find this hilarious, you'll find it less so but you'll live. The grounds are large enough that a full day doesn't feel like a stretch. The castle itself is genuinely interesting rather than just old. Chartwell — Churchill's former home, ten minutes from Sevenoaks — is better with older children who have some context for who Churchill was. The house is fascinating. The garden is lovely. The tea room is excellent. For younger children who need something more kinetic, Kidsbury Roleplay Village in Tunbridge Wells is twenty minutes south and one of the best under-7 venues in Kent — a proper miniature town where they spend an hour being the baker and refuse to leave. The countryside is the real argument for this area. The Greensand Ridge gives you views across the Weald that on clear days extend further than feels reasonable. Emmetts Garden has bluebells in spring that people genuinely plan trips around. The village of Chiddingstone — a single preserved Tudor street — is the kind of thing that takes twenty minutes and sticks in the memory for years. Sevenoaks is a good base. The stuff around it is better than the town itself.
