Things to do in Whitstable with kids

Whitstable is small, slightly windswept and completely charming. Kids either love it immediately or take about twenty minutes to come around. Whitstable works as a family day out in a way that isn't immediately obvious from the outside. It's not a theme park town. There's no obvious 'attraction' to anchor the day. What it has instead is a harbour that children find genuinely interesting, a high street that hasn't been completely chain-ified, and a beach that — once you've accepted the pebbles — is actually very good. The Crab Museum is the hidden gem. It's tiny, it's slightly eccentric, and it's run with the kind of genuine enthusiasm that makes children lean in rather than zone out. It costs almost nothing. Kids who visit it tend to remember it long after they've forgotten more expensive attractions. That's not nothing. The harbour is worth an hour on its own — fishing boats, the smell of the sea, the possibility of seeing something interesting being unloaded. The beach stretches east and west from the town and is good for a walk in almost any weather. In summer it gets busy enough that arriving before 11am makes a meaningful difference. In October it's yours. Whitstable is 10 minutes from Canterbury and 15 from Herne Bay, which means it works well as part of a bigger coastal day rather than the sole destination. The high street has enough good independent food options that lunch isn't a problem. The sea air does the rest. It's a good day out. Quieter and more genuine than the bigger Kent coastal towns, and better for it.
