What’s it actually like?
Malling Down Nature Reserve is a small Sussex Wildlife Trust site on an old chalk quarry, with paths looping over the hill and through chalky grassland. It sounds modest, but the setting does a lot of heavy lifting: this is one for families who like a walk with a view rather than a polished visitor attraction. The big wins are the scenery, the sense of space and the little details children tend to notice: sheep grazing, birds, orchids in late spring and early summer, and that slightly odd “hobbit-like” landscape in the old chalk pits. Reviews mention easy-to-medium trails, a short walk up from Lewes, and especially good sunset views. Best of all, it’s free, with free parking mentioned too. It’s not exactly plush. Parking is small and roadside, the road is fairly fast, some paths can be overgrown, and dogs need close control because of grazing animals. There’s no mention of toilets, café or baby-changing, so this is firmly a pack-your-own-snacks-and-go sort of outing. Good boots and long trousers may save a minor family sulk.

Small but scenic nature reserve with a proper climb and sweeping views. Great for walking, spotting sheep and wildflowers, and burning off child energy. Very light on facilities: free, peaceful, and a bit rough round the edges.
