Great for little ones, but it’s more play park with animals than full-on zoo.

The long read worth saving for nap time

What’s it actually like?

Battersea Park Children’s Zoo is a compact, child-sized zoo that works best for families with younger children. It’s small enough to get around quickly, and several reviews mention that it pairs nicely with a wander in Battersea Park afterwards. The big draw, frankly, is as much the play area as the animals. The good bits are genuinely good: there’s a well-designed playground, a sandpit and water play area, keeper talks, feeding sessions, and a decent mix of birds, reptiles, insects, monkeys and farm animals. One reviewer singled out the Scottish wildcats, and staff were described as polite and informative. Facilities are also solid, with clean toilets, a baby changing room and hand washing stations. The downsides are mostly about scale and weather. Some animals weren’t visible on one visit, and several reviewers felt the entry price was a bit steep for the size of the place. It can get muddy, there’s not much shelter if it rains, and some play areas aren’t accessible. Fine for a sunny family outing; less convincing if you’re expecting a big zoo day.

Two-minute orientation

Quick read

Small zoo with a very good play area and plenty to keep younger children busy. Animal talks and feeding times are a real plus when the animals are out. Best on a dry day; value feels a bit stingy if you go expecting lots of animals.

THINGS PARENTS ASK

Common questions

Will we actually see many animals?

Usually yes, but not always. One review said several animals weren’t visible on the day.

Is there anything to do beyond looking at animals?

Yes — the playground is a major part of the visit, with sand and water play too.

Is it worth going in wet weather?

Probably not ideal. Reviews mention limited shelter and muddy areas, so a dry day is better.
